ABOUT PILANESBERG
Pilansberg National Park is the fourth largest game reserve in South Africa. It covers an area of 55,000 hectares and is situated in the North West Province in an eroded volcano which is millions of years old. The reserve was proclaimed in 1979 from land that was previously cattle farmering. It was stocked up with about 6,000 head of game translocated from Kruger Park and other reserves in South Africa.
The Park is now home to 30 mammal species including the Big 5 and more than 300 bird species. . It is malaria free and easily accessible from Johannesburg so a most successful Tourism infrastructure has been developed. Visitors can choose from mid-range chalets at resorts to a variety of luxury safari lodges. Private cars are permitted on the roads but open safari vehicles with professional guides are available for day drives. Entrance fees into Pilanesberg are reasonably priced.
Wildlife Safaris supports Legacy Lodges Babubung ( People of the Hippo ) and Kwa Maritane ( Place of the Rock ). These luxury lodges offer game drives, bush walks, birding and a relaxed amoshere around the pool. Children are most welcome and have their own activities. The central point of the reserve is Mankwe Dam surrounded by grassy hills which provides great photo opportunities especially at dusk and dawn.
Nearby is Sun City entertainment complex with a selection of upmarket hotels. Visitors to Pilanesberg can arrange to play golf at one of the Gary Player designed courses or buy a ticket online to the Valley of the Waves.
